The Rise of Women-Owned Businesses
The number of women-owned businesses has been steadily increasing, yet a significant portion of businesses are still predominantly owned and operated by men. In the publishing industry, many houses may be operated by women, but ownership often remains male-dominated. This lack of diversity can lead to the prioritization of certain narratives over those from underrepresented communities. At Publish Your Purpose, we are proud to be a women-owned business committed to amplifying diverse voices and telling the stories that matter.
Understanding the Statistics
Statistics indicate that approximately 36% of small businesses are women-owned, a significant rise from just 4.6% in 1972. While these numbers show progress, they do not reflect workplace culture, pay equity, or a true commitment to diversity. For instance, although 74% of the publishing industry is made up of women, a stark pay gap exists, with men earning an average of $96,000 compared to women’s $61,000. This disparity is largely due to the prevalence of men in executive positions, making it difficult for women—and especially women of color—to break through the ranks.A Personal Journey
Jenn T. Grace, the founder and CEO of PYP, has navigated the challenges of a male-dominated job market firsthand. Her experiences shaped her vision for PYP and her commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive publishing environment. Jenn recalls her time working in a factory at age 19, where she was one of only four women among over 100 men. This experience taught her resilience and the importance of hard work, shaping her understanding of what it means to succeed despite obstacles.
Providing a Platform for Diverse Voices
Jenn’s journey led her to establish PYP as a women- and LGBTQ+-owned business, where the majority of the team comprises women and LGBTQ+ individuals. We are dedicated to uplifting stories that traditional publishers often overlook. Many publishing houses focus on a specific demographic, often rejecting ideas that don’t fit their perceived market. This is why PYP’s mission is crucial—we actively seek to tell diverse stories and help authors connect with their intended audiences.
Women are leading the charge for diversity in the workplace, creating opportunities for others to share their narratives. Although the number of women-owned businesses continues to grow, we recognize that there is still much work to be done. We take pride in being part of this movement, providing a platform for women and other underrepresented voices. Additionally, PYP is a proud member of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).
