The 3 People You Need on Your Team When Writing (and Publishing) your Book

Writing a book can be an exhilarating yet overwhelming journey. It often spans months or even years, requiring not only creativity but also emotional resilience. As you navigate this process, having the right support is crucial. Here are three key individuals you should consider adding to your team: a Strategist, a Cheerleader, and a Therapist.

Each role can be filled by different people or even a single individual, depending on your needs. While you may not require all three simultaneously, their support will be invaluable at various stages of your writing and publishing journey.

This information is also available in detail in my book, Publish Your Purpose: A Step-By-Step Guide To Write, Publish, and Grow Your Big Idea. Download Chapter 4 for free.

The Strategist: Your Roadmap to Success

The Strategist is arguably the most critical person on your team. This individual helps you maintain a 30,000-foot view of your project, offering guidance from the initial concept through to publication. A Strategist can be a project manager, a writing coach, or a publishing consultant—someone who ensures that you stay on track and adhere to a timeline.

They will help you create a structured plan that breaks down the overwhelming tasks into manageable steps, whether on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. By setting clear milestones, your Strategist will keep you focused and prevent you from feeling bogged down by the myriad of tasks ahead.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive publishing and marketing plan from day one.
  • Identify your target audience and strategize how to reach them effectively.
  • Create a launch plan to ensure your book reaches its intended readers, avoiding the fate of unsold copies gathering dust.

The Cheerleader: Your Source of Motivation

Your Cheerleader plays a vital role in keeping your spirits high throughout the writing process. This person—be it a friend, partner, or writing group member—provides encouragement and positivity, especially during challenging times.

Writing can be a lonely endeavor, often filled with self-doubt. Your Cheerleader will remind you of your purpose and help reignite your passion for your project. Their support is essential for navigating low points and celebrating your successes, big or small.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide emotional support and motivation during challenging writing sessions.
  • Celebrate milestones and achievements, reinforcing your commitment to the project.
  • Help you stay focused on your goals and remind you of your purpose when doubt arises.

The Therapist: Navigating Emotional Terrain

Writing about personal experiences can stir up unexpected emotions. This is where a Therapist—whether a licensed professional or a supportive friend—becomes invaluable. They will help you process your feelings and navigate the emotional landscape that writing may unearth.

Your Therapist can provide a safe space for you to vent, reflect, and gain perspective on your writing journey. They can help you manage the stress of publication planning and keep you grounded through the emotional highs and lows.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer a listening ear and emotional support as you work through challenging themes.
  • Help you manage stress and anxiety related to the writing and publishing process.
  • Provide insights that can enhance your personal growth and creative expression.

Knowing When to Lean on Each Role

You may not need all three roles at once, and that’s perfectly okay. Depending on where you are in your writing process, you might find that a Strategist is most helpful after your first draft, while a Therapist may be necessary when revisiting traumatic experiences in your narrative.

It’s beneficial to communicate your needs with friends or colleagues in advance. Let them know you may seek their support as a Cheerleader or Therapist at certain points in your journey. This proactive approach ensures you have the right people lined up when the time comes.

At Publish Your Purpose, we understand the emotional toll writing can take. Our team is here to fill these roles whenever you need us, providing the accountability and support that can make your publishing journey more manageable and successful.
